About MY Coudre

Our Name

MY Coudre is not your ordinary name for a business.  MY Coudre is a partnership between two sisters, Madelon and Yvette.  Our initials form the MY.  Coudre is a French word for “to use a needle and thread to make, stich, or attach something”.  Why did we pick a French word?  Our ancestry has a strong French background.

History

We are sisters and have four other siblings, two older brothers and two middle sisters.  Yvette is the older sister and Madelon is the younger.  We both inherited our passion for sewing from our grandmother, Catherine Mallett.  Grandma Mallett was a seamstress and owned her own business to help support the family.  Grandma could take a bolt of fabric and create custom draperies, and slip covers for couches and chairs.  She did this without the use of a pre-designed pattern.  Growing up, we spent hours watching Grandma work and subsequently learned to love freelance sewing with various fabrics.  Grandma enlisted the services of her daughter, Aunt Jane, and husband, Grandpa John.  Aunt Jane would assist with stitching and iron the finished products.  Grandpa John kept the shop clean by picking up thread and fabric remnants and vacuuming.
